Changing the Keymap (Keymap Tool)

Use the dedicated software Keymap Tool to change the key layout. In addition, you can improve the efficiency of key operations by registering frequently used shortcuts and changing the movements of the gesture pads.

What you can do with Keymap Tool

Applications

The applicable range is as follows:

  • Keys

  • Mouse keys

  • Gesture pads (slide operation)

Available operations/functions

You can set the key operations and functions in accordance with your intended use and preferences as shown below.

Basic key functions
  • Standard keyboard keys (HHKB Studio keys assigned as factory default)

  • Media keys (volume control, etc.)

  • Screen brightness control

  • Wheel operation (scroll)

Device functions

For the keys used to change the keyboard operation, you can change the key positions as well.

  • Mouse click operations (left click, right click, wheel click)

  • Temporarily enabling/disabling the gesture pads and pointing stick

  • Adjustment of the speed of the pointing stick

  • Adjustment of the sensitivity of the gesture pads

  • Switching windows (function unique to the gesture pads)

    Windows: Alt+Tab /, macOS: Command+Tab /

  • Switching layers ([Fn] (Function) key)

    You can also assign a new key to the Fn3 layer by assigning the [Fn3] key that is not set by default to a desired key.

Shortcut functions

You can assign shortcuts to any keys. The shortcut keys can be used in combination with the modifier keys shown below.

  • Control

  • Shift

  • Alt/Opt

  • ◇/⌘ (Windows/Command)

You can register shortcuts that are made of a combination of multiple modifier keys. You can also register different shortcuts for the right and left modifier keys respectively. (*1)

You can simplify the key operations of complicated combinations and the shortcuts different for each application, and can register the key positions to make such shortcuts easier to remember.

*1:

When multiple modifier keys are combined, shortcuts cannot be set to a combination including both right and left modifier keys.

Other functions

Keymap Tool also allows other operations as follows:

  • Enabling/disabling the pointing stick button

  • Enabling/disabling the gesture pads

  • Restoring the keymap to the default layout

  • Saving/loading a config file for the keymap

  • Updating the firmware of the keyboard

Starting use

  1. Install Keymap Tool (for HHKB Studio) from the following website.

  2. Connect HHKB Studio and a computer with a USB cable, and press the [Fn] + [Control] + [0] keys to switch to the USB connection.

    • Keymap Tool cannot be started in the following cases:

      • When HHKB Studio is not connected to the computer

      • When HHKB Studio is connected to the computer via Bluetooth

  3. Start Keymap Tool.

    • For Windows

      Click Menu Icon and select [Help].

    • For macOS

      From the menu bar at the top of the window, select [Help] [HHKB Studio Keymap Tool Help].
